What is EVENTING?
Eventing is an equestrian triathalon, with a single horse and rider team competing against other teams in three phases: dressage, cross-country, and show jumping. The phases are riden either over one day in low-level competitions, or over several days in the highest levels.
How did EVENTING get started?
This sport was originally a cavalry test for the military. It was first held as Olympic event in 1912, but only open to male military officers in active duty on military charges. Twleve years later in 1924 male civilians were allowed to compete, but it wasn't until 1964 that women were allowed to compete as well.
Dressage
Cross Country
In this phase, the horse and rider must be in excellent physical shape, to be brave, and to trust one-another. This phase requires the horse and rider to jump a series of solid obstacles along a long outdoor circuit. The fences consist of solid natural type objects such as stone walls, logs, and bushes, as well as obstacles like ponds or streams, ditches, adn drops and banks.
Show Jumping
The final phase in competition is show jumping, a.k.a stadium. This tests the technical jumping ability of horse and rider. These jumps are not solid like in the cross country portion, and will fall if knocked down. They are generally brightly coloured and decorated.
